Sample page from the 1871 Pembrokeshire Census images DVD.

Intended for use on a PC equipped with a DVD drive.

The DVD contains on a single disc the complete Pembrokeshire census records comprising over 6000 images similar to the sample above (around 107,000 people are recorded). A normal census record page contains space to record 30 individuals living in normal residential premises. Special Enumeration books were sometimes used for the collection of information from "Institutional" premises such as Workhouses, Army barracks etc. People on board ships and boats were enumerated with yet another form.

Each Enumeration District (ED) booklet contained sample pages for the guidance of the Enumerator, these are exactly the same for each ED, and we have presented a single set of these example pages rather than duplicate them for each ED.

The information covers all of Pembrokeshire completely together with Cardigan Town and other adjoining areas of Cardiganshire and Carmarthenshire.

The information was originally arranged by Registration Districts, Civil Parish and ED but common usage has decreed a "shorthand" of "Piece and ED" (the Piece number is a reference to the store/labelling that was in use at the Public Record Office). We have adhered to this common usage in our bookmark index.

Spelling can be a little variable but places are easily recognisable even when a variant is used (for example St Dogmells/St Dogmaels or Kilgerran/Cilgerran. We have used a set of bookmarks with typical present day usage.

Please be aware that Enumerators will have written down the names that were given to them - in many cases these may be "family or pet names" and may be different from the "official" Birth, Marriage or Death certificate name.

The DVD can be used stand-alone or with the Cenquest database name search facilities available on the web. The resources are complimentary with common reference numbering and indexing.

Any image is only as good as the source material but overall the pages are good in comparison with other years. Should a particular page or person cause any difficulty we will be happy to access our original materials in order to assist with clarification or interpretation.
